Serving as the Minister of National Defense from 1954 to 1959, Peng Dehuai held a central role in shaping the military structure of the People's Republic of China. Born in 1898 in Xiangtan County, his transition from a rural laborer to a prominent marshal reflected the volatile shifts in power within twentieth-century Chinese political and military life.
Military Ascent
Peng joined the professional military at sixteen, serving in various Hunan-based warlord armies for a decade. By 1926, his forces aligned with the Kuomintang during the Northern Expedition. Eventually joining the Chinese Communist Party, he rose to senior command levels, notably defending the Jiangxi Soviet and participating in the Long March. During the Second Sino-Japanese War, he commanded significant portions of the Eighth Route Army and directed the Hundred Regiments Offensive in 1940 to disrupt logistical networks.

Take the IQ test →Korean War and Professionalization
In 1950, Peng assumed command of the Chinese People's Volunteer Army during the Korean War. His frontline experience shifted his focus toward modernizing the military through Soviet-style professionalization. He sought to reduce political interference in military operations, an objective that placed him at direct odds with other high-ranking officials who prioritized political ideology over technical organization.
Political Purge and Later Years
Tensions over national economic policies, specifically during the Great Leap Forward, resulted in an open confrontation at the 1959 Lushan Conference. Labelled as an anti-Party figure, he was stripped of his influence. After a brief return to government work in 1965, he faced intense persecution during the Cultural Revolution. Subjected to torture and public struggle sessions, he was sentenced to life imprisonment in 1970 and died in Beijing in 1974.
