Her career subsequently spanned decades as a performing artist, military officer, and public figure, eventually leading to her role as the First Lady of China starting in 2012.
Early Education and Musical Development
Born in 1962 in Yuncheng County, Peng was exposed to music early through her mother, a singer in a local Yu opera troupe. By age 14, she entered the Shandong Province Yuncheng No. 1 Middle School before transferring to the Shandong Fifty-Seven School of the Arts in 1977. Under the tutelage of Wang Yinsuan, she focused on folk vocal music. In 1981, she advanced her training at the China Conservatory of Music, studying under Jin Tielin and later Guo Lanying. She achieved a significant academic milestone in 1990 by completing a master's degree in acoustics, becoming the first person to earn such a qualification in Chinese folk vocal music.

Peng joined the Chinese People's Liberation Army in 1980 as a civilian soldier, later transitioning to the Song and Dance Troupe of the General Political Bureau. Her stage reputation grew significantly in 1985 when she performed in "The White-Haired Girl" at Beijing's Tianqiao Theatre, earning the Plum Blossom Award. Beyond her stage work, she recorded theme songs for television series, including "The Water Margin" in 1998. Her international presence included performances at Lincoln Center in New York City in 2005, where she presented the opera "Psalms of Mulan" and received the Distinguished Artist Award from the venue's artistic committee.
Political and Institutional Roles
In addition to her performance career, Peng held various institutional and political positions. She served as president of the People's Liberation Army Academy of Art from 2012 until 2017. Her political involvement includes membership in the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference. Within the military structure, she holds the rank of major general and has served on the Accreditation Committee of the Political Work Department of the Central Military Commission. In 2014, she received an honorary doctorate from Massey University.
