Military Origins and Early Service
Born on 17 November 1949 in Cà Mau, Nguyễn Tấn Dũng joined the People's Army of Vietnam in 1961. He volunteered for service at age 12, fulfilling various communication and paramedic roles during the Vietnam War. Over his military career, which lasted until 1984, he attained the rank of Major and saw combat in the south and west. He served as the Chief Political Commissar of Infantry Battalion 207 and led the Personnel Board of the Kien Giang Province Military Command. He was wounded four times during his service and is officially categorized as a level 2/4 wounded veteran.

Admitted to the Communist Party of Vietnam on 10 June 1967, Nguyễn Tấn Dũng pursued education at the Nguyen Ai Quoc Party School. His career advanced through local roles in Kiên Giang Province, including Secretary of the Hà Tiên District Party Committee and Chairman of the People's Committees. By 1996, he became the youngest member of the Politburo. He served as Deputy Prime Minister from 1997 to 2006 and held the position of Governor of the State Bank of Vietnam between 1998 and 1999.

Confirmed by the National Assembly on 27 June 2006, Nguyễn Tấn Dũng assumed the premiership at age 57. His tenure saw increased focus on high-tech skills and economic growth, though it was marked by allegations of economic mismanagement and corruption, particularly regarding the Vinashin shipbuilding scandal. In 2012, internal party discussions regarding his oversight of anti-corruption efforts intensified, though the Central Committee opted against formal disciplinary action. He concluded his final term on 7 April 2016.
