A bronze medal at the 2013 World Championships marked the first time a competitor from Vietnam reached the podium at that event. Nguyễn Tiến Minh secured this historic achievement by defeating Jan Ø. Jørgensen in the quarterfinals, an effort that solidified his status as a central figure in his nation's badminton history.
Early Career and National Success
Introduced to badminton by his father at age 10, Nguyễn Tiến Minh committed to professional play in 2001 at 18, choosing sports over further formal education. Recruited into the national team that same year, he gained prominence in 2002 after defeating the long-term champion Nguyễn Phú Cường to secure the national men's singles gold medal.

Throughout his rise in international rankings, the athlete operated with limited resources. While many counterparts benefited from dedicated medical specialists and government-funded training facilities, his preparation relied heavily on family financial support and the assistance of a small group of coaches. His monthly salary during this period remained notably low, increasing only marginally despite consistent performance improvements.
The 2013 World Championships
Seeded seventh at the 2013 World Championships in London, Nguyễn navigated through multiple rounds before encountering Jan Ø. Jørgensen in the quarterfinals. The victory in that three-set match guaranteed him a medal. Although he subsequently lost to Lin Dan in the semifinals, his performance earned him an Order of Labor, 2nd class, from the Vietnamese sports authority. This followed an Order of Labor, 3rd class, received in 2011.
Record-Setting Longevity
Nguyễn holds a world record for his 13th appearance at the BWF World Championships, a milestone reached in 2022 at age 39. His career includes competition in the Asian Games and the 2008 Summer Olympics. Outside of tournament play, he opened a sports equipment retail store in Ho Chi Minh City in 2016 and married fellow badminton player Vũ Thị Trang later that same year.
