With 464 votes from the National Assembly, Nguyễn Minh Triết assumed the presidency of Vietnam in June 2006. His appointment marked a shift in leadership, as he succeeded Trần Đức Lương to become the seventh president of the country. He served in this role until July 2011, when he was succeeded by Trương Tấn Sang.
Early Education and Political Initiation
Born in 1942 in Bến Cát, Bình Dương province, Triết grew up in a farming family. He moved to Saigon in 1957 to attend Petrus Ky High School and later studied mathematics at the University of Saigon. During his university years, he became involved in student movements opposing the government of Ngo Dinh Diem. He officially joined the Communist Party of Vietnam in 1965, operating under the alias Sáu Phong while working in the southern war zones.

Triết managed significant administrative roles throughout the 1980s and 1990s. In 1992, he became the party chief of Sông Bé province, where he facilitated foreign direct investment to boost the local agricultural economy. His career progressed to Ho Chi Minh City, where he served as Party Secretary beginning in 2000. During this tenure, he led anti-corruption initiatives, most notably overseeing the investigation and legal proceedings against the organized crime figure Trương Văn Cam.
Presidential Tenure and Foreign Relations
As president, Triết represented Vietnam on the global stage. In 2007, he conducted an official visit to the United States at the invitation of President George W. Bush. This trip included a meeting with hundreds of business leaders in Orange County. Throughout his presidency, he remained the fourth-ranking member of the Politburo, operating within a structure where the party determines national policy while the presidential role maintains ceremonial functions.
