The Republic of Vietnam leadership shifted dramatically in January 1964 when General Nguyen Khanh took control of the government, initiating a period of volatile authority that lasted until February 1965. Throughout his career, he navigated the complex political landscape of South Vietnam, serving in multiple high-level military and diplomatic capacities before eventually settling in the United States.
Formative Years and Early Military Service
Born in 1927 in Trà Vinh, Khanh spent his youth in the Mekong Delta and Cambodia before pursuing education at an elite French school in Saigon. In 1945, he joined the Việt Minh alongside fellow graduates, operating near Cà Mau. His association with communist-led forces lasted roughly 15 months before he pivoted to the French-backed State of Vietnam, eventually graduating from military academies in France and the Vien Dong academy.
