Technogym began inside a humble garage in 1983 when 22-year-old Nerio Alessandri started building exercise equipment. Born in Gatteo, Italy, in 1961, he transformed his small startup into a global enterprise. Over the following decades, he shifted the industry focus from specific sports training to a comprehensive lifestyle philosophy he formally defined as Wellness.
Foundations of Technogym
Alessandri launched his business career by creating the Isotonic Line in 1984, followed by the Unica home trainer in 1986. His technical contributions progressed significantly in 1988 with the patenting of the CPR system, an algorithm designed for constant heart rate monitoring during workouts. This technological focus eventually expanded the brand to approximately 80,000 installations in wellness centers and 400,000 private homes worldwide.

During the 1993 California International Conference in Rimini, Alessandri introduced the concept of Wellness as an alternative to existing fitness models. Rooted in the Roman principle of a healthy mind in a healthy body, this approach emphasizes a balanced diet and regular physical activity. He formalized this mission in 2003 by establishing the Wellness Foundation, which conducts research and manages the Wellness Valley project in the Romagna region to improve community quality of life.
Institutional Recognition and Growth
Alessandri has received numerous accolades for his industrial contributions. In 2001, President Carlo Azeglio Ciampi appointed him the youngest Knight of Industry in Italian history. He holds honorary degrees from the University of Urbino and the University of Bologna. Beyond Technogym, he has held shares in the sports nutrition firm Enervit and the spa manufacturer Starpool, while also serving in roles such as vice president of the Leonardo Committee.
Global Expansion
Technogym now employs 2,000 people across 13 international branches, exporting 90% of its products to over 100 countries. The company has served as the official supplier for seven editions of the Olympic Games, ranging from Sydney 2000 to Tokyo 2020. In 2012, Alessandri inaugurated the Technogym Village alongside his brother Pierluigi, Italian President Giorgio Napolitano, and former US President Bill Clinton.
