On 27 July 1997, Neritan Ceka assumed the role of Minister of Internal Affairs in Albania, a position he held until 18 April 1998. Beyond his political activities, he established a career as an archaeologist, academic, and art historian, contributing to the understanding of ancient Illyrian, Greek, and Roman sites located throughout his home country.
Academic Foundation
Born in Tirana in 1941, Neritan Ceka pursued his early education at Qemal Stafa High School. He continued his academic path at the University of Tirana, where he eventually earned a doctorate. Following his studies, he remained at the university, transitioning into a role as a university teacher and researcher, eventually serving as the director of the Archaeological Institute.

His primary scientific focus involves excavations at significant historical locations across Albania. He has led investigations at major sites including Butrint, Apollonia, and Byllis. His scholarly output documents these findings, with publications such as Buthrotum: Its History and Monuments, Byllis: Its History and Monuments, co-authored with Skender Mucaj, and the volume Arkeologjia: Greqia, Roma, Iliria, produced in collaboration with Muzafer Korkuti. As an active member of the German Archaeological Institute, he maintains links to international academic research.
Political Engagement
In the early 1990s, Ceka participated in the formation of the Democratic Party of Albania as a founding member. He later left this group to establish the Democratic Alliance, a liberal political faction that participated in a governing coalition alongside the Socialist Party. These activities culminated in his appointment to the Ministry of Internal Affairs during the government of Prime Minister Fatos Nano.
