Lasha Shavdatuashvili

The 2012 Summer Olympics saw Lasha Shavdatuashvili claim a gold medal in the 66 kg event, marking the beginning of a consistent career in international judo. Born in 1992 in Gori, Georgia, Shavdatuashvili has established himself as a fixture in multiple Olympic cycles and major championships across two different weight categories throughout the 21st century.

Early Career and Breakthrough

Shavdatuashvili secured his first major global success at the 2012 Summer Olympics. Following this victory, he added the European title in the 66 kg division to his resume in 2013. Transition to -73 kg Division

In 2014, the judoka transitioned to the 73 kg category. While this move initially presented difficulties in matching his previous success, his development over time allowed him to remain competitive at the elite level. His persistence resulted in a bronze medal at the Rio 2016 Summer Olympics, achieved after a victory against Israeli judoka Sagi Muki, complemented by a silver medal at the European Championships that same year.

Continued International Performance

The 2020 Summer Olympics, delayed due to global circumstances, provided the setting for another podium finish as Shavdatuashvili earned a silver medal. In the final match, he was defeated by Shohei Ono, a back-to-back gold medalist, via wazari. His performance in 2021 was marked by winning a World Title and receiving the Male Athlete of the Year award at the Judo Awards. By 2023, he contributed to the Georgian team victory in the mixed team event at the European Games, and in 2024, he secured a bronze medal at the European Championships.
