Born in 1946 within the Helsingborgs Maria church parish, Vilks pursued a rigorous academic path, earning his doctorate in art history from Lund University in 1987. His professional tenure included lecturing at the Oslo National Academy of the Arts from 1988 until 1997, followed by a professorship in art theory at the Bergen National Academy of the Arts ending in 2003. As a proponent of the institutional theory of art, he frequently analyzed his own artistic actions from a third-person perspective.

Vilks began creating self-taught visual art in the 1970s. In 1980, he initiated the construction of two distinct sculptures: Nimis, composed of driftwood, and Arx, built from rock and concrete. His work extended to conceptual provocations, such as presenting his own car as an art piece. He famously transferred ownership of Nimis to Joseph Beuys to navigate Swedish building code restrictions, and the work was later held by the conceptualist Christo. Another notable piece, the one-tonne concrete sculpture Omphalos, was acquired by the Moderna Museet.
Controversies and Security Impacts
In 2007, Vilks produced drawings depicting Muhammad as a roundabout dog. Following the publication of one drawing in Nerikes Allehanda, he faced international condemnation and numerous death threats, requiring constant police protection for the remainder of his life. These tensions resulted in several security incidents, including a 2010 assault at Uppsala University and multiple foiled assassination plots involving international actors. Vilks died in 2021 in Markaryd.
