Early influences and formation
Born in Gentofte, Denmark, in 1963, Ulrich was raised in an environment surrounded by sport, with both his father Torben and grandfather Einer active as tennis players. Although he initially moved to Newport Beach in 1980 to pursue tennis, his trajectory changed after failing to make the Corona del Mar High School team. His musical interest, sparked by the album Fireball and later by the British band Diamond Head, led him to place an advertisement in a local publication seeking musicians. This search resulted in his meeting with James Hetfield, leading to the establishment of Metallica in 1981.

Ulrich rose to prominence as a key figure in the development of thrash metal, noted for his aggressive, high-speed double bass drum patterns on early records such as Kill 'Em All and Master of Puppets. His equipment preferences consistently excluded the traditional ride cymbal in favor of the louder China cymbal. While his style pivoted toward a more simplified, hard rock-oriented approach during the 1990s, he reintroduced complex thrash elements in later studio projects like Death Magnetic and Hardwired... to Self-Destruct.
Industry advocacy and film
In April 2000, Ulrich became a public face of the industry's opposition to digital piracy by testifying before the Senate Judiciary Committee regarding the copyright practices of Napster. Outside of music, he has engaged in various media projects, including a role in the 2012 film Hemingway & Gellhorn and hosting the program It's Electric on Apple Music.
