During the 10,000-metre final on 3 September, he recovered from a fall that occurred at the twelfth lap to break Ron Clarke’s seven-year-old world record, finishing in 27:38.35. His success was partially attributed to his meticulous curve management—a strategy known as bend mathematics—which minimized unnecessary distance compared to rivals like Steve Prefontaine.
Double-Double and Political Career
At the 1976 Montreal Olympics, Virén became the first athlete to repeat as a double champion in these events. His victory in the 10,000 metres was followed by a contentious shoe-waving incident that nearly cost him a spot in the 5,000-metre final.
