Early Career and ABBA
Hallström attended Adolf Fredrik's Music School in Stockholm, where he began experimenting with 8 mm films. In the late 1960s, he secured a position at Sveriges Television as a director of short pop music clips. His association with ABBA became his most significant early professional endeavor, spanning from 1974 to 1982. During this period, he directed their 1977 film ABBA: The Movie alongside nearly all of the group's promotional music videos, with the exception of seven tracks such as Chiquitita and The Day Before You Came.

The 1985 release of My Life as a Dog brought Hallström significant international attention, facilitating his move into the American film industry. His first English-language project was Once Around in 1991. He followed this with What's Eating Gilbert Grape in 1993, which featured performances by Johnny Depp and Leonardo DiCaprio. Over the subsequent decades, he focused on literary adaptations, including the 1999 production The Cider House Rules and the 2000 feature Chocolat.
Adaptations and Later Projects
Hallström continued his career through diverse projects such as the 2001 film The Shipping News, adapted from the novel by E. Annie Proulx, and the 2011 feature Salmon Fishing in the Yemen. His 2017 project A Dog's Purpose explored themes surrounding the human-animal bond. In 2024, he directed and served as executive producer for the Nordic Noir thriller series The Darkness, which starred his wife, Lena Olin. Throughout his career, Hallström has received multiple accolades, including the Guldbagge Honorary Award in 2024 and the Litteris et Artibus award in 2025.
