Early Life and Legal Practice
Born in Patras in 1926, Stephanopoulos attended the Lycée Léonin and the 1st Junior High School of Patras before pursuing legal studies at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. He established his professional foundation as a lawyer, a career he maintained from 1954 to 1974. During his youth, he was also active as a swimmer, balancing his academic pursuits with disciplined physical training.

Stephanopoulos began his parliamentary journey in 1974, retaining his seat in the Hellenic Parliament until 1989. His executive experience started immediately in 1974 as an undersecretary, followed by his appointment as Minister of the Interior from 1974 to 1976. He subsequently managed Social Services until 1977 and concluded his ministerial tenure as the Minister at the Presidency of the Government, a role he held until 1981.
The Presidency and Later Years
In 1995, Stephanopoulos assumed the presidency, representing a unifying figure for the Greek political landscape. Re-elected in 2000, he served until 2005, earning consistent popularity ratings as an approachable and steady leader. His tenure concluded after a decade of service. He passed away on 20 November 2016 at the Henry Dunant Hospital Center in Athens at the age of 90.
