The intellectual trajectory of Konstantinos Negris began in Istanbul in 1804 and spanned a lifetime of pedagogical reform in the nascent Greek state. As a member of the Phanariot family Negris, his early exposure to the Greek War of Independence and subsequent higher education in Paris defined his lifelong commitment to modernizing mathematical instruction.
Early Education and Military Service
Before his formal scientific training, Negris received his foundational education in Chios under the guidance of Neophytos Vambas. At age seventeen, he joined his family in the Greek War of Independence. His participation in the revolution led to his capture by Ottoman forces, though his status as a Phanariot secured his release. Alexandros Mavrokordatos later facilitated his travel to France, where he attended the École Polytechnique.

Upon returning to Greece in the mid-1830s, Negris secured a professorship at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. In an official proposal dated July 21, 1836, he advocated for the implementation of descriptive geometry. He structured his teaching around the works of Adrien-Marie Legendre and Jean Nicolas Pierre Hachette, covering topics including differential and integral calculus, the binomial theorem, and the intersections of second-degree surfaces.
Political Unrest and Professional Transition
The Revolution of September 3, 1843, significantly altered the university faculty, resulting in the temporary expulsion of all foreign-born professors, including Negris. Although he was reinstated within months, he resigned his academic post in 1845. His later life was characterized by civil service, diplomacy, and involvement in social welfare through his role as vice president of the Merciful Company of Athens.
