Katiuscia Maria Stella Ricciarelli, known professionally as Katia Ricciarelli, began her professional singing career in 1969 by performing the role of Mimì in Mantua. Since her emergence from the Benedetto Marcello Conservatory in Venice, she has balanced a rigorous international performance schedule with a long-standing career in cinema, television, and vocal education within her native Italy.
Early Career and International Rise
Born in Rovigo in 1946, Ricciarelli studied at the Conservatorio di Musica Benedetto Marcello di Venezia before winning multiple vocal competitions in 1968. Her initial success in Mantua led to an appearance as Leonora in Parma in 1970 and a victory at the RAI Voci Verdiane award. By the mid-1970s, she had secured engagements at the Lyric Opera of Chicago, La Scala in Milan, the Royal Opera House in London, and the Metropolitan Opera in New York City. In 1981, she initiated a ten-year collaboration with the Rossini Opera Festival in Pesaro to expand her vocal repertoire.

Beyond her operatic output, Ricciarelli transitioned into film acting. In 1986, she portrayed Desdemona in the Franco Zeffirelli film adaptation of Verdi's Otello alongside Plácido Domingo. Her work in cinema earned critical recognition, including a Nastro d'Argento for Best Actress for her performance in the 2005 Pupi Avati film La seconda notte di nozze. In the academic and administrative spheres, she founded the Accademia Lirica di Katia Ricciarelli in 1991 and served as the artistic director of the Macerata Opera festival between 2003 and 2005.
Television and Public Life
In the 21st century, Ricciarelli extended her public profile through appearances on Italian reality television. She participated in the Canale 5 program La fattoria in 2006 and, more recently, was a contestant on the 2021–2022 season of Grande Fratello VIP 6, where she remained for 165 days. She was married to television personality Pippo Baudo from 1986 until their separation in 2004, with their divorce finalized in 2007. Ricciarelli currently resides in Bardolino, located by Lake Garda.
