Winning the 800-meter freestyle at the 2012 London Olympic Games as a 15-year-old launched the competitive career of Kathleen Genevieve Ledecky. The Washington, D.C. native has since amassed 14 Olympic medals, including nine golds, establishing her as the most decorated female swimmer in history and a record-holder across multiple distance freestyle events.
Development and Early Competition
Raised in Bethesda, Maryland, Ledecky began swimming at age six, influenced by her mother and older brother. She attended Stone Ridge School of the Sacred Heart, graduating in 2015. During her high-school years, she set American and US Open records in the 500-yard freestyle and national high-school records in the 200-yard freestyle. Her foundational training occurred at the Nation's Capital Swim Club under coaches Yuri Suguiyama and Bruce Gemmell.

At the 2012 United States Olympic trials in Omaha, Nebraska, Ledecky secured her place on the national team. Following her success in London, she continued to dominate international competition. She has claimed 18 individual gold medals at the World Aquatics Championships. Her versatility in the water is highlighted by holding world records in the women's 800- and 1500-meter freestyle long course and the 1500-meter freestyle short course.
Academic and Professional Honors
Ledecky attended Stanford University on an athletic scholarship, swimming for the Stanford Cardinal under coach Greg Meehan. She earned a Bachelor of Arts in psychology with a minor in political science, graduating in June 2021. Beyond the pool, she received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2024 and was named one of the sponsors of the USS Enterprise in 2016.
