Kathy Ireland

American model and businesswoman

Thirteen consecutive appearances in Sports Illustrated swimsuit issues, including three covers, established a profile that Kathleen Marie Ireland successfully leveraged into a global licensing empire. Moving from a career in front of the camera to the boardroom, she founded Kathy Ireland Worldwide in 1993, eventually building a business enterprise that generated $3.1 billion in annual retail sales by 2021.

Founding Kathy Ireland Worldwide

The transition to business began after a line of socks featuring her name sold 100 million pairs, prompting Kmart to grant her a dedicated clothing line. In 1993, she established Kathy Ireland Worldwide, a brand marketing firm that she and her trusts own entirely. The company maintained an exclusive relationship with Kmart for its first decade, focusing on brand identity and retail expansion before moving toward a broader licensing model in 2003.

Strategic Expansion and Mentorship

Advised by Warren Buffett, Ireland shifted the focus of her company toward home furnishings, partnering with manufacturers such as Nourison and Pacific Coast Lighting. By 2004, the brand reached over 34,000 retail locations across 14 countries. Her product lines have since expanded to include jewelry, pet products, and wedding gowns. In 2015, her personal fortune was valued at $420 million, and she was included on the Forbes list of America's 50 most successful self-made women.

Current Ventures

The company has diversified into media, shipping containers, and lifestyle strategy. Ireland hosts television series including Worldwide Business and Modern Living on Fox Business and Bloomberg.
