Kapil Dev remains the only cricketer in the history of the sport to have captured more than 400 wickets and scored over 5,000 runs within the format of Test cricket. Born in Chandigarh in 1959, he established a career as an aggressive fast-medium bowler and a hard-hitting middle-order batsman for the Indian national side.
Early Career and Domestic Success
Born in 1959 to Ram Lal Nikhanj, a teak merchant, and his mother Rajkumari, Dev was raised in Chandigarh and attended D.A.V. College. He debuted for Haryana in November 1975, immediately marking his potential with a six-wicket haul against Punjab. By the 1977-78 season, he had secured his first 10-wicket match haul. His domestic consistency reached a peak in the 1990-91 Ranji season, when he led Haryana to their maiden title by scoring 141 runs and taking five wickets in the semi-final, followed by a victory over the Bombay team in the final.

Dev made his Test debut against Pakistan in Faisalabad on 16 October 1978. His international profile grew rapidly, notably after he scored a maiden Test century of 126 runs off 124 balls against the West Indies in Delhi. His career spanned from 1978 until his retirement in 1994, during which he became the first player to claim 200 ODI wickets and held the world record for the highest number of Test wickets with 434, a record eventually surpassed by Courtney Walsh. Between 1981 and 1985, he also gained experience in the English county system, representing Northamptonshire and Worcestershire.
World Cup Leadership
In 1983, Dev captained the Indian cricket team to victory at the Cricket World Cup. At 24 years old, he became the youngest captain to secure the title for any nation and the first of Indian heritage to achieve the feat. Following his playing career, he served as the coach of the Indian national team from September 1999 to September 2000. His contributions to the sport have been recognized with numerous honors, including the Wisden Cricketer of the Year in 1983 and induction into the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame in 2010.
