Karch Kiraly

American volleyball player and coach

Karch Kiraly stands as the only athlete to secure Olympic gold medals in both indoor and beach volleyball categories. Born in 1960 in Jackson, he transitioned from a collegiate standout at the University of California, Los Angeles, into a foundational figure for the United States national team, ultimately becoming a transformative force in both international and professional tournament play.

Collegiate Development

Kiraly attended Santa Barbara High School before enrolling at UCLA in 1978. Under head coach Al Scates, he played as both an outside hitter and setter, contributing to three NCAA Men's Volleyball Championship titles in 1979, 1981, and 1982. During his tenure, the Bruins maintained a 123–5 match record. He earned All-American honors throughout his four-year career and received the NCAA Volleyball Tournament Most Outstanding Player award in 1981 and 1982. He graduated in June 1983 with a Bachelor of Science degree in biochemistry.

Indoor Success and Olympic Dominance

Joining the U.S. National Team in 1981, Kiraly became a primary component of a refined serve reception system. He helped lead the team to gold medals at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles and the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul. Following his international indoor service, he spent two years in Italy with Il Messaggero Ravenna, where he secured titles including the 1991 Italian Volleyball League and the 1992 CEV Champions League.

Beach Volleyball Career

Kiraly transitioned to full-time beach volleyball on the AVP tour in 1992, partnering with Kent Steffes. Over four decades of competition, he accumulated 148 tournament victories, making him the winningest player in the sport's history. His career concluded with him reaching the semifinals in over 80% of domestic events. This success culminated in his victory at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, the inaugural Olympic competition for the sport.

Coaching Transitions

Following his competitive career, Kiraly moved into coaching roles. He served as the coach for the United States women's national team, guiding them to their first-ever gold medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. He currently serves as the head coach of the United States men's national volleyball team. He was inducted into the Volleyball Hall of Fame in 2001.
