Jason Drew Harrow, professionally known as Kardinal Offishall, is a Canadian hip-hop artist and music executive whose career spans independent production and major-label success. Emerging from Toronto's mid-1990s underground scene, he earned recognition for integrating reggae and dancehall influences into his music, eventually securing an executive role at Universal Music Canada.
Early Development and The Circle
Born in 1976 in Scarborough, Ontario, Harrow began rapping at age eight and performing by age 14. He studied philosophy at York University without completing a degree. In 1993, he adopted the alias Kardinal Offishall, inspired by the 17th-century French politician Cardinal Richelieu. That same year, he co-founded the hip-hop collective known as the Circle, which included artists such as Choclair, Jully Black, Solitair, Tara Chase, and Saukrates.

Kardinal released his debut album, Eye & I, in 1997 through Capitol Hill Music, following a publishing deal with Warner/Chappell Music Canada. Despite critical praise for its diverse blend of genres, the album faced distribution challenges. In 2000, he signed with MCA Records, subsequently releasing the album Quest for Fire: Firestarter, Vol. 1 in 2001. This major-label debut featured the singles "Ol' Time Killin'" and "BaKardi Slang," the latter of which became notable for popularizing the nickname "T-dot" for Toronto.
KonLive and Global Success
After a period of label instability following the absorption of MCA by Geffen Records, Kardinal signed with Akon’s KonLive Distribution in 2007. His fourth studio album, Not 4 Sale, arrived in 2008. The lead single, "Dangerous" featuring Akon, achieved significant commercial success, peaking at number two on the Canadian Hot 100 and number five on the US Billboard Hot 100, earning quadruple platinum certification from Music Canada.
Executive Transition
Beyond his recording career, Kardinal shifted into music industry management. In 2013, he was appointed creative executive director of the A&R division at Universal Music Canada. After releasing the album Kardi Gras, Vol. 1: The Clash in 2015, he continued his corporate progression, being promoted to senior vice-president of A&R for the same company in April 2021.
