The 2026 Cannes Film Festival opened on 13 May with the world premiere of Butterfly Jam, the first English-language feature directed by Kantemir Balagov. Born in 1991 in Nalchik, he emerged from the North Caucasian region to secure international recognition as a filmmaker, writer, and cinematographer, navigating a career that spans Russian national cinema and major global television productions.
Academic Foundations in Nalchik
Balagov studied at Berbekov Kabardino-Balkarian State University in his hometown. He gained entry to a specific cinema workshop led by Alexander Sokurov after contacting the director directly, despite missing the initial application deadline. During his tenure as a student alongside peers including Kira Kovalenko, Alexander Zolotukhin, and Vladimir Bitokov, he produced several documentary and fiction shorts. Some of these projects gained international visibility when they were screened at the 67th Locarno Festival.

His feature-length directorial debut, Closeness, premiered in the Un Certain Regard program at the 2017 Cannes Film Festival, where it secured the FIPRESCI prize. That same year, he earned the GQ Russia Prize for Discovery of the Year. He returned to Cannes in 2019 with Beanpole, which earned him the Un Certain Regard Award for Best Director and another FIPRESCI award. Beanpole was selected as Russia’s submission for the 92nd Academy Awards and reached the December shortlist for Best International Feature Film.
Television Work and International Exile
In January 2021, production began on a television adaptation of The Last of Us, with Balagov hired to direct the pilot. By October 2022, he confirmed his departure from the project due to creative disagreements, though approximately 40% of his footage remained in the series' final version. Following the February 2022 invasion of Ukraine, Balagov publicly condemned the military action and relocated to California. In September 2022, he and filmmaker Kira Kovalenko served as guest directors for the 49th Telluride Film Festival.
Production of Butterfly Jam
Balagov commenced principal photography for Butterfly Jam on 2 April 2025. The feature film is a collaborative production between Pascal Caucheteux’s Why Not Productions and Alexander Rodnyansky’s AR Content. The project represents his transition into English-language feature filmmaking, culminating in its selection as the opening title for the Directors’ Fortnight at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival.
