Four consecutive Olympic gold medals define the career of Japanese freestyle wrestler Kaori Icho. Olympic Dominance
Icho secured her gold medals in freestyle wrestling during the 2004, 2008, 2012, and 2016 Summer Olympics. Her performance at the 2016 Games marked her status as a ten-time World Champion. Prior to this, she maintained a period of absolute competitive control, only ending on 29 January 2016 when she lost to Pürevdorjiin Orkhon of Mongolia at the Golden Grand Prix Ivan Yarygin.

In 2018, a formal complaint addressed power abuse directed toward Icho by Kazuhito Sakae, the development director of the Japan Wrestling Federation. The allegations stemmed from her 2009 departure from his coaching. Records indicate that Sakae ordered her new coach, Chikara Tanabe, to cease operations, barred her from the Keishicho wrestling club, and restricted her access to men's training camps. Further accusations included her exclusion from the 2010 Asian Games team.
Recognition and Awards
The Japanese government recognized Icho through numerous honors, including the Medal with Purple Ribbon, which she received in 2004, 2008, 2012, and 2016. In 2012, she was awarded the Kikuchi Kan Prize. On 20 October 2016, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe presented her with the People's Honour Award. Additionally, Tokyo Sports granted her the Wrestling Special Award across eleven separate years.
