Academic and Early Research
After graduating from Oak Ridge High School, Lee earned a Bachelor of Science in computer science from Columbia University in 1983. He proceeded to Carnegie Mellon University, obtaining his Ph.D. in 1988. During this period, he focused on machine learning and pattern recognition. His doctoral dissertation introduced Sphinx, a large-vocabulary, continuous speech recognition system that received significant attention. He also developed the Othello-playing program Bill, which successfully competed in national tournaments.

Lee served as a faculty member at Carnegie Mellon before joining Apple Inc. in 1990. During his six-year tenure there, he managed R&D groups for projects including PlainTalk and GalaTea. Following a period at Silicon Graphics, he joined Microsoft in 1998. He moved to Beijing to establish Microsoft Research China, which became a prominent lab. After returning to the United States in 2000, he acted as corporate vice president of the interactive services division until 2005.
The Google Transition
In 2005, Lee moved to Google, an appointment that prompted a legal dispute with Microsoft over non-compete agreements. Following a court-ordered settlement in December 2005, he assumed leadership of Google China. During his time there, he oversaw the regional launch of Google.cn and the expansion of local engineering teams. He resigned from the company in 2009.
Venture Capital and AI Innovation
Upon leaving Google, Lee founded the Beijing-based incubator Innovation Works, later rebranded as Sinovation Ventures, to support early-stage technology startups. In 2023, he established 01.AI. This startup focused on large language models, releasing the Yi-34B model and the multimodal Yi-VL-34B. By 2025, the company collaborated with Alibaba to advance LLM technologies and launched the Wanzhi enterprise platform.
