The term trans-Golgi network, now a cornerstone of cell biology, was introduced by Finnish biochemist Kai Simons to describe the cellular compartments responsible for sorting proteins and lipids. Born in Helsinki in 1938, Simons has built an extensive career spanning medicine, biochemistry, and molecular biology, fundamentally altering the scientific understanding of how cell membranes are organized.
Early Education and Academic Foundation
Simons pursued his medical training at the University of Helsinki, where he completed his MD in 1964. During his student years, he participated in a campaign to manage taeniasis and conducted early research into vitamin B12 absorption. A summer internship at Bengt Samuelsson’s laboratory in Stockholm preceded his transition to postdoctoral studies at The Rockefeller University, where he spent 1966 to 1967 analyzing blood serum protein polymorphism.

In 1975, Simons relocated to Heidelberg to serve as a group leader at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory. Over the next two decades, he specialized in vesicular transport and cell polarization. By investigating the Semliki Forest virus, he elucidated how cells sort molecules. This research led to his 1988 proposal of lipid microdomains, which he famously coined as lipid rafts. These structures, distinct in composition from surrounding membranes, became a central theme of his later academic influence.
Leadership in Dresden and Industry
Simons played a primary role in establishing the Max Planck Institute of Molecular Cell Biology and Genetics in Dresden. He served as a director from 1998 to 2006 and continued as a group leader until 2012, at which point he became director emeritus. Since 2012, he has applied his expertise to the private sector as the CEO and co-founder of the biotechnology firm Lipotype GmbH.
