Kai Michael Hansen began his musical path in 1978 with the band Gentry, laying the foundation for a career that would place him at the heart of the German power metal scene. Born in Hamburg in 1963, he transitioned from a childhood interest in wash-drums to becoming a prominent composer, guitarist, and vocalist.
Early Career and Helloween
In 1983, Hansen co-founded the band Helloween alongside Michael Weikath. He served as the primary guitarist and vocalist until Michael Kiske assumed the role of singer for the releases of Keeper of the Seven Keys Part I and Part II. By January 1, 1989, Hansen exited the group, citing physical exhaustion and professional friction regarding tour scheduling following a two-month hospitalization for hepatitis B.

After departing Helloween, he established his own project, Gamma Ray. His discography expanded through extensive worldwide touring and numerous studio efforts. Throughout his tenure, he contributed to the work of others, providing guest vocals for Blind Guardian and appearing on tracks for Angra. In 1997, he briefly joined Iron Savior as a guitarist before returning his full attention to the development of Gamma Ray.
Recent Years and Reunions
Hansen joined the hard-rock ensemble Unisonic in 2011, reuniting with Michael Kiske to release the debut album Unisonic in 2012 and the follow-up Light Of Dawn in 2014. In 2016, he issued his solo album XXX—Three Decades in Metal via earMUSIC. His connection to Helloween resumed in 2016, leading to the Pumpkins United World Tour, which ran from 2017 through 2019 to mark the anniversary of his earlier work.
Instrumentation and Technique
His vocal delivery evolved from the aggressive, raspy style common in early thrash metal to a more melodic, traditional power metal approach. His technical approach to the guitar has relied on ESP instruments since the late 1980s, alongside custom models such as the Pink Panther RR style V by Viv Guitars.
