Early Development and European Transfers

Beginning his professional journey with Peñarol in the Uruguayan Primera División, Rodríguez contributed to a league title in 2003 at eighteen years old. His performance led to a move to French side Paris Saint-Germain FC in 2005. Following this, he transitioned to Portugal, where he initially joined S.L. Benfica on loan before completing a permanent transfer to FC Porto in 2008. His time in Portugal saw him secure multiple league titles and the 2010-11 UEFA Europa League trophy.

Tenure at Atlético Madrid and Subsequent Moves

In 2012, Rodríguez signed a four-year contract with Atlético Madrid. During his stint in Spain, he contributed to the 2013-14 La Liga title and the 2012 UEFA Super Cup. His career later included short spells with Parma F.C. in Italy, Grêmio FBPA in Brazil, and Club Atlético Independiente in Argentina. These later years were frequently impacted by injury management, leading to the termination of his contract at Independiente in 2016.

Return to Uruguay and Retirement

Returning to his roots, Rodríguez announced a second stint with Peñarol in February 2017. This period proved successful, yielding national championships in 2017 and 2018, along with the 2018 Supercopa Uruguaya. He concluded his time at Peñarol in April 2021 with 126 appearances and 39 goals. After a final brief spell with Club Plaza Colonia de Deportes, he confirmed his retirement from professional football on 17 January 2023.

International Milestones

Debuting for Uruguay against Mexico at eighteen, Rodríguez became a consistent fixture for his nation. He played a central role in the 2011 Copa América victory, representing his country in various continental and global competitions. Despite disciplinary challenges, including a four-match ban during the 2010 World Cup qualifying cycle, he remained a key offensive option for coach Oscar Tabárez for over a decade.
