Born in Reșița on 26 October 1980, Chivu entered professional football through CSM Reșița. Under the guidance of his father, Mircea, he progressed to the senior squad during the 1996–97 season. His debut in the top flight occurred on 30 August 1997 against Universitatea Cluj. Following his father's death in March 1998, Chivu demonstrated significant professional composure, scoring a penalty the day after the tragedy. In 1998, he transferred to Universitatea Craiova, where he played until his move to Ajax in 1999 for a $2.2 million fee.

Success and Leadership at Ajax

Chivu debuted for Ajax on 13 October 1999. By 2001, coach Ronald Koeman appointed him captain of a squad featuring Rafael van der Vaart and Zlatan Ibrahimović. His tenure in the Netherlands was highlighted by the 2001–02 league and cup double. Beyond his defensive duties, he became recognized for his ability to convert free kicks. His individual performance in Amsterdam earned him the Ajax Player of the Year award in both 2001 and 2003, alongside the 2002 Dutch Golden Shoe.
