Early Development in Mexico
Before his professional trajectory began, Vela developed his skills within local structures in Cancún, playing for a club named Ko Cha Wolis. After participating in youth tournaments in Buenos Aires, he joined the C.D. Guadalajara system in 2003. Arsenal signed Vela in November 2005. Due to initial work permit restrictions, he spent formative years on loan at Spanish clubs including Salamanca and Osasuna. Upon receiving his work permit in May 2008, he returned to Arsenal, making his Premier League debut against Newcastle United that August. His time in London included a notable hat-trick against Sheffield United in the League Cup and his first Premier League goal against Portsmouth in 2009.
Success at Real Sociedad and the United States
Vela moved to Real Sociedad in 2011, where he enjoyed a six-year tenure, scoring 73 goals across 250 matches. In 2018, he joined Los Angeles FC. His tenure in the United States included winning the Landon Donovan MVP Award and the MLS Golden Boot, setting a record of 34 goals in a single season. He secured an MLS Cup title in 2022 before retiring three years later.

Vela made his senior national team debut for Mexico in 2007 during a friendly match against Brazil. He contributed to the 2009 CONCACAF Gold Cup victory and played in the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
