Early Development and Ideological Roots
Born in 1949 in Caracas, Venezuela, Ramírez Sánchez was raised in a household deeply involved in Marxist politics. His father, a lawyer, named him after Vladimir Lenin. After attending Liceo Fermin Toro, he joined the youth movement of the Venezuelan Communist Party in 1959. By 1966, he had attended a guerrilla warfare school in Cuba before enrolling at the Peoples' Friendship University of Russia in Moscow, from which he was eventually expelled in 1970.

Following his time in Moscow, Ramírez Sánchez traveled to Lebanon and joined the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine. He adopted the code name Carlos, provided by recruiter Bassam Abu Sharif. The media nickname, The Jackal, emerged after a journalist discovered a copy of the novel The Day of the Jackal in an apartment where he had stored weapons. He gained tactical experience during the 1970 Black September conflict in Jordan and further training at the H4 facility near the Syria-Iraq border.
Terrorist Operations in Europe
Ramírez Sánchez participated in numerous acts of violence, including a 1973 attempt to assassinate Jewish businessman Joseph Sieff in London and attacks on French media outlets. In 1975, he killed three people, including two French counterintelligence agents, during a confrontation at a Parisian house party. Later that year, he led an armed assault on the OPEC headquarters in Vienna, taking over 60 hostages and killing three individuals before escaping to Libya.
Capture and Legal Consequences
After years as a high-profile fugitive, Ramírez Sánchez was eventually captured in Sudan via extrajudicial methods and transferred to French authorities. He has since been convicted of multiple crimes, including the 1975 murders in Paris and various bombings intended to secure his wife's release from prison. He is currently serving three consecutive life sentences for his actions.
