Ayelet Shaked

Israeli politician, activist and engineer (born 1976)

Born in 1976 in Tel Aviv, Ayelet Shaked established a career spanning the Israeli high-tech sector and the halls of the Knesset. An engineer and computer scientist by training, she transitioned into legislative influence, serving in multiple ministerial roles, including Minister of Justice and Minister of the Interior, while navigating the shifting landscape of Israeli electoral alliances.

Background and Professional Foundations

Shaked was raised in the Bavli neighbourhood of Tel Aviv. Her educational path led her to Tel Aviv University, where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in electrical engineering and computer science. Following her graduation, she entered the Israeli high-tech industry, holding a position as a software engineer at Texas Instruments, where she eventually managed the company’s marketing department. Her early life also included service in the Israel Defense Forces, where she served as an infantry instructor with the Golani Brigade.

Early Political Involvement

Her political activities began prior to her tenure in the Knesset. Between 2006 and 2008, she directed the office of Benjamin Netanyahu. In 2010, she co-founded the extra-parliamentary movement My Israel with Naftali Bennett, leading the group until 2012. During this period, she campaigned against illegal immigration and criticized the editorial direction of Galei Tzahal. By 2012, she joined the Jewish Home party, securing a position on their list for the 2013 national elections.

Legislative and Ministerial Tenure

As a member of the Knesset, Shaked served from 2013 until 2022 across several terms. Her legislative record includes drafting the 2016 NGO law and the comprehensive national anti-terrorism law. She also contributed to the proposal for Basic Law: Israel as the Nation-State of the Jewish People and legislation aimed at restricting the powers of the Israeli Supreme Court. From 2015 to 2019, she held the cabinet position of Justice Minister, and from 2021 to 2022, she served as the Minister of the Interior.

Party Realignment

Shaked participated in multiple party formations throughout her career. In 2018, she left the Jewish Home to help found the New Right party. Following electoral challenges in 2019, she assumed the leadership of the New Right and later spearheaded the Yamina electoral alliance, which included Tkuma and the Jewish Home. These shifts occurred amidst complex periods of government coalition building and parliamentary dissolution.
