Background and Early Life
Born in 1969 in Mogadishu, she is the daughter of Hirsi Magan Isse. During her childhood, she moved frequently across Africa and the Middle East. At age five, she underwent female genital mutilation. In Kenya, she attended the Muslim Girls' Secondary School and later completed a secretarial course at Valley Secretarial College in Nairobi. During her youth, she engaged with the views of the Muslim Brotherhood and briefly supported the fatwa issued against Salman Rushdie.

After settling in the Netherlands, she pursued education at Leiden University. She gained Dutch citizenship and became involved in politics as a member of the People's Party for Freedom and Democracy. Her parliamentary tenure lasted from 2003 until 2006. In 2004, she collaborated with Theo van Gogh on the film Submission, a work critical of the status of women under fundamentalist Islamic law. The project prompted death threats, leading to a period where she lived in hiding.
Writing and Public Intellectualism
Following her move to the United States, she became a fellow at the American Enterprise Institute and a member of the intellectual dark web. Her literary output includes several books: The Caged Virgin, Infidel, Nomad: From Islam to America, and Heretic: Why Islam Needs a Reformation Now.
