Academic Foundation and European Research
Born in Christiania in 1849 to Christen Johannessen and Christine Oline Thorkildsen, Axel Johannessen pursued his early education through to an artium graduation in 1866. He subsequently enrolled at the Royal Frederick University, now the University of Oslo, qualifying as a cand.med. in 1875. His medical education included extensive international travel to Germany, Austria, and Italy, where he focused on infectious diseases through the lens of emerging germ theory.

Johannessen began his medical career in 1876 at Bærums Verk in Bærum. Throughout the 1880s, his research interests expanded; he conducted a study on the occurrence of struma in 1885 and later visited medical institutions in Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, France, and Denmark to analyze tuberculosis treatment protocols. By 1891, he transitioned into an academic role as a lecturer in childhood diseases at the University of Kristiania.
Advancement of Pediatrics
In 1893, Johannessen became a senior doctor at the newly created children's department of Rikshospitalet. He attained the rank of professor of childhood diseases in 1895. Beyond his clinical duties, he served as a founder of the Norwegian Society of Pediatricians, leading the organization until 1922. As a member of the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters, he solidified the professional standing of pediatrics within his home country.
