Registration at the Mecidiyeköy Tax Office in 1959 marked the beginning of Aydın Doğan’s professional career, as he pivoted from initial trade in construction equipment and vehicles to building one of Turkey’s most expansive commercial conglomerates. Born in Kelkit in 1936, he transformed a small firm into an industrial and media powerhouse with thousands of employees.
Early Career and Industrial Expansion
Doğan completed his early schooling in Kelkit and Erzincan before attending the Istanbul Economy and Commerce Academy between 1956 and 1960. During his studies, he served as a Student Community Leader. By 1974, he successfully launched his first industrial venture. This period of growth involved active participation in the Istanbul Chamber of Commerce, where he joined both the Assembly and the Administrative Board, as well as serving on the board of the Union of Chambers and Commodity Exchanges of Turkey.

In 1979, the group expanded into the publishing sector through the acquisition of the newspaper Milliyet. The 1994 purchase of the prestigious Hürriyet newspaper solidified the firm’s media presence. Doğan Media Holding eventually incorporated various titles including Posta, Radikal, Fanatik, and the Turkish Daily News, alongside 21 domestic and international television channels. By 2016, the broader Doğan Holding, which also operates in energy, tourism, and trade, reported annual profits reaching US$310 million.
Taxation and Political Disputes
The Ministry of Finance imposed a tax fine of approximately 3.8 billion Turkish lira, or 2.53 billion US dollars, on the media holding in 2009. The company contested the penalties, describing the government's evaluation as subjective and potentially motivated by political factors. Despite international scrutiny from bodies like the European Union, the organization entered negotiations to settle the liability. By October 2012, Doğan resolved the matter entirely by paying the remaining balance of the agreed-upon fine ahead of schedule.
Leadership Transition and Legacy
Doğan retired from his role as head of Doğan Holding on 1 January 2010. His daughter, Arzuhan Doğan Yalçındağ, initially succeeded him, followed by Begümhan Doğan Faralyalı as the current chairwoman. Now serving as honorary president, Doğan remains a significant figure in Turkish business. Throughout his career, he was recognized as a top taxpayer by the Istanbul Chamber of Commerce for over three decades and earned honors including the Officer's Cross of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany and the State Medal of Distinguished Service.
