He has investigated aspects of algebraic combinatorics, the foundations of Rees algebras, and the use of differential methods in mathematics. His work further encompasses the study of birational maps, Cremona maps, and algebraic vector fields, positioning him as a key participant in the Brazilian Research Group in Commutative Algebra and Algebraic Geometry from 1997 to 2007.

He was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1975 and has received additional fellowships from the Max Planck Institute, the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, and the Istituto Nazionale di Alta Matematica.
