Arouna Koné emerged from the Ivory Coast to build a professional football career that spanned nearly two decades across European leagues. Born in 1983 in Anyama, the striker became a recognizable figure in international competition and club football, moving between the Netherlands, Spain, England, and Turkey before concluding his playing days in the lower Belgian tiers.
Early Career and Move to Spain
After establishing himself in the Eredivisie with Roda JC and PSV, Koné transferred to the Spanish club Sevilla in 2007 for a reported €12 million. His tenure in Spain was marked by physical challenges, including a cruciate knee ligament injury sustained during an international match against Guinea in August 2008. While at Sevilla, he faced periods of limited playing time, leading to loan spells with Hannover 96 and Levante.

In 2012, Koné signed a three-year contract with Wigan Athletic. He contributed to the team's success by winning the FA Cup, playing the full match in a 1–0 victory against Manchester City. Following Wigan’s relegation, he joined Everton in 2013 on a three-year deal. During his time at Everton, he recorded a hat-trick against Sunderland in November 2015 and remained with the club until his release in 2017.
International Representation
Koné represented the Ivory Coast national team between 2004 and 2013, earning 39 caps and scoring 9 goals. He was part of the national squad that qualified for the 2006 FIFA World Cup, the first time the country reached the tournament, where he appeared in three matches. Additionally, he participated in three Africa Cup of Nations tournaments for his home country.
Final Years
Following his departure from Everton, Koné moved to the Turkish club Sivasspor in 2017. He performed as the team's top scorer during the 2018–19 season with 11 goals, adding to the 13 goals he scored in his debut season there. In July 2022, he joined the Belgian ninth-tier club VK Weerde, where he played for six months before announcing his retirement.
