Early Rule and Carinthian Origins
Born around 850, Arnulf spent his youth near the imperial residence at Karnburg. As the illegitimate son of Carloman of Bavaria and Liutswind, he established his initial power base in the Duchy of Carinthia, holding the title of Duke from 880 to 887. His early governance was defined by territorial management in Pannonia and complex administrative duties inherited after his father became incapacitated by a stroke in 879.

In November 887, Arnulf gathered the support of eastern nobles at a Diet in Tribur to oust Charles the Fat. His legitimacy as King of East Francia was initially confined to the eastern realms, as regions like West Francia and Italy elected their own leaders. He spent his early reign managing regional diets at Forchheim and Frankfurt, while mediating ecclesiastical disputes between the sees of Bremen, Hamburg, and Cologne.
Military Campaigns and Imperial Title
Arnulf led consistent military campaigns against Slavic tribes in Pannonia and the Obotrites. In September 891, he achieved a decisive victory against invading Vikings at Maastricht. Expanding his influence into Italy, he invaded the region multiple times, eventually securing coronation as Emperor of the Occident by Pope Formosus on 22 February 896. This title remained contested by rivals such as Lambert of Italy and Berengar I.
