Arnon Milchan

Born in Rehovot in 1944, he spent decades oscillating between Israeli defense interests and the production suites of major Hollywood studios in a career defined by parallel professional lives.

Early Business Ventures

Milchan inherited a fertilizer company at the age of 21 following the sudden death of his father. He transitioned this enterprise into a robust chemical business while pursuing an education at the London School of Economics and Political Science. This early industrial foundation provided the infrastructure for his subsequent entry into secretive state operations, as his firm, Milchan Brothers Ltd., became a vehicle for sensitive procurement activities on behalf of the Israeli government.

Intelligence Operations

From the mid-1960s to the mid-1980s, Milchan served as an operative for Lekem, a specialized Israeli intelligence organization. Recruited by Shimon Peres, he utilized his international connections to facilitate the acquisition of military technology and materials for Israel's nuclear program. His involvement included acting as an arms dealer and managing front companies that financed diverse intelligence requirements. In 2013, he publicly confirmed these historical activities during a television appearance on the program Uvda.

Hollywood and Regency Enterprises

Milchan entered the film industry in 1977, establishing relationships with directors including Martin Scorsese, Sergio Leone, and Terry Gilliam. In 1991, he founded New Regency Productions, which produced titles such as Heat, Fight Club, and Mr. & Mrs. Smith. His tenure as a producer saw multiple Academy Award recognitions, including nominations for L.A. Confidential and The Revenant. Beyond feature films, he has held interests in the sportswear company Puma AG and various broadcasting rights for television networks.

Legal and Political Scrutiny

In 2018, Israeli police recommended that charges of bribery be brought against Milchan in a probe known as Case 1000. The investigation concerned allegations that he provided gifts valued at over 1 million shekels to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in exchange for legislative favors. Specifically, authorities examined the attempt to extend tax exemptions for returning residents, a policy colloquially referred to in the press as Milchan's Law.
