Amir Khusrau was an Indo-Persian scholar and artist whose work during the Delhi Sultanate helped shape the cultural foundations of the Indian subcontinent. Early Life and Education
Born in 1253 in Patiyali, Khusrau was the son of Amir Saif ud-Din Mahmud, a Turkic officer, and Bibi Daulat Naz. His father ensured he was well-versed in both his cultural heritage and the languages of the region. Following his father's death in 1260, Khusrau began developing his literary skills at a young age, compiling his first divan, Tuhfat us-Sighr, by 1271.

Khusrau spent much of his adult life in the service of various rulers within the Delhi Sultanate. He held positions under patrons including Nasir ud-Din Bughra Khan and later received the title 'Amir' from Sultan Jalal ud-Din Firuz Khalji. His professional duties often required him to travel, providing him with a broad perspective on the intellectual life of centers like Multan.
Literary and Musical Legacy
As an expert in various Persian verse forms, such as the ghazal and masnavi, he utilized complex metrical schemes to advance regional literature. His musical contributions are equally significant; he is credited as the father of qawwali and the individual who introduced the ghazal style of singing to India. He remained a devoted follower of the Sufi teacher Nizamuddin Auliya until his death in 1325.
