Dong Young-bae was born on May 18, 1988, in Uijeongbu, Gyeonggi Province. He met Kwon Ji-yong, the future G-Dragon, at age twelve when both were trainees at SM Entertainment. They left SM together for YG Entertainment in 2000 and trained at YG for six years before debut. The early friendship — formed at twelve, during the pre-debut years — would become one of the longest documented working partnerships in K-pop.

He debuted with BIGBANG on August 19, 2006, as the group's main vocalist. His vocal register — a tenor with strong R&B inflection and an unusual capacity for falsetto restraint — became the central pop-vocal voice of BIGBANG. On the group's tracks "Sunset Glow," "Stupid Liar," and "Bad Boy," Taeyang's lead vocal anchored the choruses.

His solo debut mini-album, "Hot," arrived in May 2008. The follow-up full-length "Solar" (June 2010) made Taeyang one of the first K-pop male soloists to chart in the iTunes Top 5 R&B chart in the United States. The lead single "I'll Be There" and the slow ballad "Wedding Dress" became some of the most-covered K-pop tracks of the early 2010s on Western R&B YouTube channels — "Wedding Dress," in particular, generated covers by US singers including Joe Jonas and J. Reyez that drove the original to chart in non-Korean markets.

His second studio album, "Rise" (2014), included "Eyes, Nose, Lips," which Taeyang both wrote and produced. The song topped the Korean Gaon charts for multiple weeks, won Song of the Year at the 2014 Melon Music Awards and the 2014 Mnet Asian Music Awards, and became, by industry consensus, the contemporary Korean break-up-ballad standard. The accompanying "Eyes, Nose, Lips Cover Project," launched by Taeyang, invited public covers of the song; submissions came in from K-pop's biggest names including Akmu, Lyn, and members of f(x).

In February 2018, Taeyang married actress Min Hyo-rin, his partner of four years; the wedding, held at a small Catholic chapel in Yangjae, was attended by all four other BIGBANG members and remained, by his own request, off the press circuit. He enlisted for South Korean mandatory military service the following month, served in an active-duty infantry unit, and was discharged with the rank of sergeant in November 2019.

His third studio album, "White Night" (2017), and its accompanying world tour represented the close of his decade-long run with YG Entertainment. In 2022, after his contract with YG expired, Taeyang signed with The Black Label, the YG-affiliated label founded by producer Teddy Park. The signing produced the 2023 single "Vibe," a collaboration with BTS's Jimin that hit number one on the Korean Circle digital chart and entered the Billboard Hot 100 at number 76 — Taeyang's first US chart entry.

By 2025, Taeyang had released the EP "Down to Earth" (2023), continued his collaboration work with The Black Label, and become a father. His personal-life decisions — the early marriage, the public Christian-faith identity, the absence of major scandal — made him an unusual figure inside K-pop, where the standard career narrative includes longer single-status windows and more publicised public personas.

The Taeyang of 2026 is, in the Korean industry conversation, a particular kind of figure: the second-generation male vocalist whose songwriting on "Eyes, Nose, Lips" produced what may be the single most-covered Korean ballad of the past fifteen years, and whose career structural choices — the personal stability, the long YG run, the late-career label transition — represent a quieter counterpoint to the more publicised trajectories of his BIGBANG bandmate G-Dragon and the post-BIGBANG generations.

His vocal style — anchored by Stevie Wonder and Justin Timberlake as his stated formative influences, and shaped by the R&B Korean industry tradition that ran from Park Jung-hyun through Lim Jeong-hee — became, through the early 2010s, one of the structural references for male K-pop vocal training. The Taeyang model — a tenor with R&B inflection rather than the operatic-pop register more common in earlier Korean male-idol training — produced a generation of imitators inside YG and at competing labels. By the time the third generation of K-pop boy groups arrived around 2013, the male R&B-tenor vocal register that Taeyang had popularised was the dominant audio signature of the K-pop boy-group lead-vocalist position.
