🇮🇳 Kareena Kapoor Khan

She was born in Bombay in September 1980 to the actor Randhir Kapoor and the actress Babita, the great-granddaughter of Prithviraj Kapoor and the granddaughter of Raj Kapoor. Her elder sister Karisma had become a star by the time Kareena was a teenager, which made the family business unavoidable and the comparison merciless. The Kapoor convention — boys are filmmakers, girls do not work — had been broken first by Karisma and then, finally, by their mother Babita's insistence that the girls would work.

Refused Wrigley's chewing gum on set, drove a Mercedes at sixteen, debuted at twenty in J.P. Dutta's Refugee (2000) opposite Abhishek Bachchan. The film, set on the Indo-Pakistan border, was a non-event commercially; the next two years were a procession of garish costume dramas — Mujhe Kucch Kehna Hai, Asoka, Yaadein, Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham — that nearly buried her promise under sequins.

Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Devdas (2002), in which she played Chandramukhi's spiritual opposite Parvati opposite Shah Rukh Khan, was the first sign that the family talent had landed in her too. Chameli (2003), as a Mumbai street prostitute opposite Rahul Bose, was the second — a guerrilla-style night-shoot film that won her the Filmfare critics' award and reset what producers thought she would do.

Then came the run that defined her: Omkara (2006) as Iago's wife in Vishal Bhardwaj's Othello, Jab We Met (2007), Tashan (2008) which made her the most-photographed body in Indian magazines after Size Zero became, briefly, a national topic and a magazine cover line; 3 Idiots (2009), opposite Aamir Khan, became the highest-grossing Hindi film of its era and consolidated her as the working-actress lead the industry now scheduled around.

Heroine (2012), Madhur Bhandarkar's anti-glamour biopic of a Bombay film actress unravelling on antidepressants and tabloid hostility, was her producer-curated showcase — co-written by Bhandarkar to her specific weaknesses and strengths. The film divided critics; the performance did not. Talaash (2012), opposite Aamir Khan, demonstrated she could also play subtext.

She married the actor Saif Ali Khan, a divorced father of two and twelve years her senior, in a registry ceremony in October 2012 followed by a Pataudi reception attended by half of the industry. Their sons Taimur Ali Khan and Jehangir were born in 2016 and 2021. The marriage joined two royal lineages — Kapoor and Pataudi — that the press has not stopped photographing since.

She has co-authored three Pregnancy Bibles and a cookbook with the nutritionist Rujuta Diwekar, hosts the chat show What Women Want with the journalist Maleeka R Bhatt, and runs a podcast that is, characteristically, less about confession than about brand maintenance. The shift from on-screen vehicle to multi-platform proprietor was incremental, deliberate, and almost invisible to the gossip press.

Her 2023 turn in Sujoy Ghosh's The Devotion of Suspect X (Jaane Jaan) for Netflix, opposite Vijay Varma and Jaideep Ahlawat, was a deliberate exit from glamour — no make-up, a sweater pulled around her shoulders, the Kalimpong fog wet on her hair, the kind of performance Bebo had been postponing. Crew (2024), opposite Tabu and Kriti Sanon, returned her to the all-female heist comedy with a producer credit. The next decade of her career is hers to engineer.

She remains, in the words of one veteran critic, the only Hindi actress of her era who can be in a film and not let the film entirely have her. There is always, in a Kapoor performance, a flicker of the dynasty refusing to disappear into the part — and it is, against every dramatic theory, what makes her watchable.
