🇯🇵 Shin Ohashi

Seventeen years old and holding world junior records in both breaststroke distances, long course and short

58.67 in the 100m breaststroke — his own record, broken again • 2:06.59 in the 200m breaststroke, seventh-fastest performer in history • 2:01.24 short course, another world junior record

Breaststroke is the stroke that rewards patience. It is the slowest of the four, the most technical, and the one where swimmers historically peak latest, because the propulsion comes from a kick that takes years of drilling to time correctly. This makes what Shin Ohashi did at seventeen unusual in a way that a comparable freestyle time would not be. At the Japan Swim national championships he lowered his own world junior record in the 100m breaststroke to 58.67. He then swam 2:06.59 in the 200m breaststroke, a world junior record that placed him seventh on the all-time list of performers in the event — a list that includes every adult who has ever swum it. In short course he took the 200m breaststroke world junior record down to 2:01.24.

The all-time-performer ranking is the number that carries the most weight. World junior records are, by construction, comparisons against other teenagers. Being the seventh-fastest human ever to swim the 200m breaststroke long course is a comparison against the entire history of the event — Olympic champions, world record holders, adults at the peak of their careers. A seventeen-year-old in that position is not merely ahead of his age group; he is inside the senior world final conversation on time alone.

Breaking one's own world junior record is a different kind of marker from setting one. The first time a record falls, it can be a single well-timed swim. The second time, against your own mark, means the improvement is a trend rather than an event. Ohashi took the 100m breaststroke world junior record and then broke it again at Japan Swim, going 58.67 — inside fifty-nine seconds, a barrier that for most of the stroke's history belonged only to a handful of senior men.

Holding records across both distances is rarer still. The 100 and the 200 breaststroke are close to different sports: the 100 is a power event decided by stroke rate and underwater speed off the walls, the 200 is an aerobic event decided by how little a swimmer decelerates over the back half. Specialists in one are usually not competitive in the other. Ohashi held the world junior record in both, and added the short-course 200 as well, at 2:01.24.

Japan Swim is the national championship meet and the country's selection event, which means these were not time trials or exhibition swims. He won the 200m breaststroke title at the meet, in a field of senior Japanese internationals, at a championship where Japan has a long tradition in the stroke — the country has produced Olympic breaststroke champions in successive generations, and its national final is one of the deepest in the world in this event.

None of the above says anything about what happens at a senior world championship or an Olympic Games, and this page will not extrapolate. What is on the record, dated and timed to the hundredth of a second, is a seventeen-year-old holding three world junior records in a stroke that usually belongs to men in their mid-twenties.

The seventh-fastest 200m breaststroke performer in history is a ranking against every adult who has ever raced the event, not against other juniors, and that is the number that separates this from an ordinary age-group record. Breaststroke is also the stroke where late development is the norm, which makes a seventeen-year-old holding both distances at once an outlier rather than a projection.

The qualification worth stating: world junior records are set by the fastest teenager in the world at a given moment and are broken regularly. A senior international medal is a different test, run against fully developed athletes at a single championship on a single day, and Ohashi has not yet been measured on it in the published record. Times are facts; outcomes are not yet.
