Early Career and Training
Born in Bratislava in 1971, Piussi graduated from the Department of Directing at the Film and Television Faculty of the Academy of Performing Arts in Bratislava. Her creative foundations were established in the theater sector, where she collaborated with the ensemble Stoka between 1992 and 2000. She later participated in the theatrical project SkRAT, an experience that influenced her subsequent approach to documentary filmmaking.

Her debut documentary, Výmet, earned a major trophy at the Beirut International Film Festival in 2003. She gained critical recognition with Anjeli plačú in 2005, which secured an Audience Award at the International Documentary Film Festival in Jihlava. Her later works, including Babička and Koliba, explored themes of aging and the privatization of national film studios, while her portrait of Pavel Branko, Hrdina našich čias, examined the concept of the superfluous man.
The Disease of the Third Power
The release of Disease of the Third Power in 2011 caused significant controversy due to its critical look at the Slovak judiciary. Judge Helena Kožíková pursued legal action, seeking 30,000 euros in compensation and accusing the director of violating confidentiality. Following a petition signed by nearly 3,000 people and pressure from the media and international figures, the Ministry of Justice dropped the charges in early 2013.
Controversy and Recognition
In 2012, Piussi released Od Fica do Fica, a documentary analyzing the organizational aspects of the Gorilla protests, and Krehká identita, which examined the emergence of nationalism in Slovakia. Despite being rejected by mainstream multiplexes, these films garnered significant attention. Fragile Identity won first prize at the 2012 Jeden svet documentary festival and earned the filmmaker the Andrej Stankovič Prize.
