Zurab Zhvania emerged from the Faculty of Biology at Tbilisi State University in 1985 to become a central figure in Georgian governance. Spanning his career from the country's drive for independence in the late 1980s to his tenure as Prime Minister, he navigated the complex transition from the Soviet Union to an independent state.
Political Ascent
Zhvania entered national politics in 1988, co-chairing Georgia's Green Party during the campaign to regain independence. By 1993, he served as General Secretary of the Union of Citizens of Georgia, the party established by Eduard Shevardnadze. His parliamentary career began in 1995, culminating in his election as Chairperson of the Parliament of Georgia, a position he held until 2001.

Following a fallout with Shevardnadze over corruption, Zhvania resigned his speakership and founded the United Democrats in 2002. He played a critical role in the 2003 protests against rigged parliamentary elections, which led to the resignation of Shevardnadze. After the subsequent election of Mikheil Saakashvili, Zhvania served as Prime Minister from February 2004 until his death.
Government and Policy
As Prime Minister, he managed a young cabinet focused on reformist policies. He acted as a moderate influence relative to President Saakashvili and participated in talks regarding the separatist regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia. His tenure involved controversial privatization decisions, including the sale of the port of Batumi and portions of the Black Sea fleet.
Circumstances of Death
Zhvania died in Tbilisi on 3 February 2005. Official investigations concluded that he and Raul Usupov died from carbon monoxide poisoning due to an improperly ventilated gas heater in their apartment. While authorities maintained there was no foul play, members of his family and political associates, including Eduard Shevardnadze, later questioned the circumstances. He was buried at the Didube Pantheon.
