Tom Dumoulin secured his place in cycling history as the first Dutch rider to win the Giro d'Italia in 2017. Early Career and Professional Debut
Dumoulin originally intended to study medicine but pivoted to Health Sciences before committing to cycling. After the disbanding of the Cervélo TestTeam, he joined the Rabobank Continental Team in 2011 before turning professional with the Dutch Project 1t4i team in 2012.

The 2015 season served as a demonstration of Dumoulin's potential in Grand Tours. He secured victories at the Tour of the Basque Country and the Tour de Suisse. During the Vuelta a España, he led the general classification into the final weekend after winning stage 17. Despite his efforts, he struggled on the penultimate stage and finished the race in sixth place overall.
Grand Tour Success and Global Recognition
Dumoulin achieved his primary milestone at the 2017 Giro d'Italia, overcoming stomach issues to win the title. Later that year, he became the first Dutch male to win the time trial at the UCI Road World Championships. His consistent performance continued in 2018 with second-place finishes at both the Giro d'Italia and the Tour de France. Over his career, he won nine Grand Tour stages and two Olympic silver medals.
Retirement from Professional Cycling
After a hiatus during the first half of 2021, Dumoulin returned to competition at the Tour de Suisse and won the Dutch National Time Trial Championships. He announced plans to retire in 2022 and officially concluded his professional racing career on 15 August 2022. Throughout his tenure, he was recognized as the Dutch cyclist of the year in 2014, 2015, 2016, and 2017, and was appointed a Knight of the Order of Orange-Nassau.
