Early Development and Training
Born in Paisley, Renfrewshire, on 22 November 1941, Conti is the son of Alfonso Conti, an Italian immigrant, and Mary McGoldrick, who was of Irish descent. He attended Hamilton Park St Aloysius' College in Glasgow before enrolling at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama. His professional tenure began in 1959 with the Dundee Repertory.

Beyond his success in Whose Life Is It Anyway?, Conti appeared in the West End production of Jeffrey Bernard is Unwell in 1989 and directed the 1979 Broadway production of Last Licks. His filmography is extensive, featuring roles in The Duellists, Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence, and Shirley Valentine. In 2023, he portrayed Albert Einstein in Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer. Television work includes the BBC sitcom Miranda, Faerie Tale Theatre, and appearances in adaptations of The Glittering Prizes and The Norman Conquests.

Conti authored the novel The Doctor, published in 2004, which centers on a former secret operations pilot. A long-term resident of Hampstead, he has been active in local planning disputes, including opposition to developments near Grove Lodge and a campaign against a local supermarket. In 2012, genetic analysis conducted by ScotlandsDNA indicated he shares a genetic marker with Napoleon Bonaparte.
