Early Development and International Career
Raised in a prominent Chittagong family by parents Iqbal Khan and Nusrat Iqbal Khan, Tamim followed his brother Nafees Iqbal and uncle Akram Khan into professional cricket. Tamim maintained an extensive career in franchise cricket worldwide. In 2011, he joined Nottinghamshire as a short-term replacement, becoming the second Bangladeshi to play county cricket in England. His global footprint included stints with the St. Lucia Zouks in the Caribbean Premier League, Wayamba United in the Sri Lanka Premier League, and the Peshawar Zalmi in the Pakistan Super League. Although signed by the Pune Warriors India for the 2012 season, he did not appear in a match.
Bangladesh Premier League Impact
Domestically, Tamim became a consistent fixture in the Bangladesh Premier League. He served as the icon player for the Chittagong Kings in 2012 and later captained teams including Duronto Rajshahi and Fortune Barishal. In the 2019 season, he became the first player to surpass 2,000 career runs in the tournament's history. His tenure with Fortune Barishal resulted in consecutive titles in 2024 and 2025, where he served as both captain and a leading run-scorer.
Medical Emergency
On 24 March 2025, during a Dhaka Premier Division Cricket League match against Shinepukur Cricket Club, Tamim suffered a heart attack on the field. After requiring emergency medical intervention, he was transported to Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib Memorial KPJ Specialised Hospital. Following a second cardiac event, doctors performed an angiogram and angioplasty to address arterial blockages, and he was placed on life support during his critical recovery phase.
