Tan Boon Heong

Malaysian badminton player

A world record smash of 421 km/h cemented Tan Boon Heong’s reputation in 2009, highlighting the explosive power that defined his career as a professional badminton player. Hailing from Alor Setar, the Malaysian athlete ascended to world number one status, securing a diverse collection of honours including Asian Games gold and multiple national championship titles.

Early Success and Tactical Partnership

Born on 18 September 1987, Tan initially gained professional momentum alongside Hoon Thien How, with whom he claimed victory at the 2004 World Junior Championships. Ascension to Global Rankings

The year 2007 marked a high point for Tan and Koo as they achieved the number one world ranking. Their form was punctuated by victory at the Malaysian Open and an All England Open title, earned by overcoming Cai Yun and Fu Haifeng in straight games. While they remained consistent, they faced difficult outings at the 2008 and 2012 Olympics, reaching the quarter-finals and semi-finals respectively.

Transition and Post-Association Career

Following a decline in results and the subsequent resignation of Koo, Tan participated in several scratch partnerships with players including Goh V Shem and Tan Wee Kiong. After resigning from the Badminton Association of Malaysia in 2015, he briefly reunited with Koo to pursue qualification for the 2016 Rio Olympics. In later years, he continued competing internationally, partnering with players such as Hendra Setiawan, Yoo Yeon Seong, and Kim Sa Rang.
