Sergio Marchionne served as the chief executive officer of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, orchestrating a strategic merger between the two companies that created the world's seventh-largest automobile manufacturer. Across his career, he functioned as a lawyer, accountant, and industrialist, navigating complex multinational corporate environments in Italy, Switzerland, and Canada before his sudden resignation and death in 2018.
Early Education and Professional Foundations
Born in Chieti in 1952, Marchionne moved to Toronto, Ontario, at the age of 13. He pursued extensive academic training, graduating from the University of Toronto with a degree in philosophy. He subsequently earned a bachelor of commerce degree and an MBA from the University of Windsor, followed by a law degree from Osgoode Hall Law School at York University. His early professional path included roles at Deloitte Netherlands between 1983 and 1985, as well as executive positions at the Lawson Mardon Group and Alusuisse Lonza Group.

In 2004, Marchionne assumed the role of CEO at Fiat. Five years later, he navigated the strategic alliance between Fiat and Chrysler following the latter's emergence from Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. By 2014, the two entities fully merged into Fiat Chrysler Automobiles. During this period, he also served as the president and CEO of Ferrari and maintained leadership roles at CNH Industrial and SGS. His management style was noted for its transparency, including the 2015 presentation titled Confessions of a Capital Junkie.
Final Tenure and Health
Marchionne maintained a heavy schedule of executive duties until mid-2018. His final public appearance occurred on 26 June 2018 in Rome. Shortly thereafter, he entered the University Hospital of Zürich for shoulder surgery. Following unexpected medical complications, he resigned from all corporate positions on 21 July 2018. He died four days later at the age of 66. His remains were buried in Ontario.
