Sergio Ermotti

Early Career and Training

Born in 1960, Ermotti initially considered a career in professional football or sports instruction. At 17, he entered an apprenticeship at Cornèr Bank in Lugano, gaining exposure to accounting and finance. He eventually earned a Swiss federal banking expert diploma and participated in the Advanced Management Program at the University of Oxford. His interest in foreign exchange trading led him away from sport and into the financial sector.

Global Financial Institutions

In 1986, Ermotti joined Citibank in Zurich as a trader. He transitioned to Merrill Lynch in 1987, where he spent 17 years holding various leadership roles in equity derivatives and capital markets across Zurich, London, and New York. By 2005, he moved to Milan to lead markets and investment banking for UniCredit. He became deputy chief executive officer of the Italian lender before his departure in 2010.

UBS Leadership and Credit Suisse Integration

Ermotti joined UBS in 2011, becoming group chief executive officer later that year following a rogue trader scandal. He refocused the bank on wealth management and capital-light investment banking. After stepping down in 2020, he returned to the helm in April 2023 to oversee the integration of Credit Suisse. In 2024, his compensation package totaled 14.9 million Swiss francs, reflecting his role in the merger.

Additional Roles and Civic Interests

Beyond his tenure at UBS, Ermotti served as chairman of Swiss Re from 2021 to 2023. He has held board positions at the London Stock Exchange, the Institute of International Finance, and Ermenegildo Zegna N.V. While his banking success fueled speculation regarding a potential shift into Swiss politics, Ermotti has explicitly stated that he is not a politician.
